A beautifully crafted animated TV and cinema commercial made with BBC Creative for Children in Need. The film needed to feel emotive yet positive, and shed light on the ways Children in Need supports the UK’s most vulnerable children, whilst also encouraging donations from the public.
Challenge
The charity needed a film that could help children and families talk about mental health in a way that felt safe, accessible and hopeful. Based on the Goodbye Rain Clouds book, the challenge was to translate a deeply personal story into animation while preserving the warmth, empathy and reassurance of the original, creating a film that could support conversations around anxiety, depression and emotional wellbeing.
Solution
As Creative Director and Film Director, I developed an animated adaptation that placed emotion at the heart of every creative decision. Working closely with the book's visual language, we brought its illustrations to life through gentle character animation, atmospheric environments and thoughtful pacing that reflected the emotional journey of the story. Every element was designed to feel honest, comforting and human, creating a film that would resonate with children and adults alike while remaining true to the spirit of the book.
Result
The finished film became a powerful extension of the Goodbye Rain Clouds story, helping the charity reach wider audiences through animation. By combining sensitive storytelling with a carefully crafted visual style, the project created an engaging resource that encouraged open conversations about mental health and demonstrated how animation can communicate difficult subjects with empathy, hope and lasting emotional impact.
